Performs skilled electrical, controls, and mechanical maintenance for the Central Utilities Plant and associated utility systems, including troubleshooting, repairing, installing, and maintaining electrical distribution systems, boilers, chillers, generators, pumps, compressors, control systems, and related equipment. Conducts preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance, medium-voltage switching, equipment calibration, vibration analysis, and system inspections to ensure safe and reliable utility operations. Interprets electrical plans, maintains compliance with electrical and safety regulations, supports utility and engineering projects, operates university vehicles and specialized equipment, completes work orders using AiM mobile devices, and assists with plant operations and other maintenance activities as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Primary electrical and controls technician for the Central Utilities Plant (600V or less).  Change motors, breakers, switches, and control devices as required to keep the facility operational.  Maintain knowledge of the National Electrical Code as it applies to the Central Utilities Plant.  Assist with repairs to the 4160V and 15kV campus electrical system. Performs medium voltage switching to isolate the campus distribution system circuit segments to facilitate new building projects, equipment and cable replacement projects, and to isolate faults during partial campus power outages. Completes required safety training and complies with all safety standards, including but not limited to lock out-tag out, safe handling of hazardous chemicals, participation in campus safety teams, and wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Repairs and maintains electrical system, control system, boilers, steam turbines, emergency generators, water pumps, fuel oil pumps, compressors, chillers, buildings, fuel oil shortage tanks, and all support equipment and piping systems.  Packs pumps, glands, valves, and lubrication equipment to reduce product loss and to ensure safe and efficient operation.  Performs corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance on all related equipment.  Performs routine inspections of water distribution systems, rotary equipment, and related components.  Troubleshot and calibrated flow meters.  Performs vibration analysis.  Maintains related records.
  • Inspects and maintains the 5kv feeders and equipment for the campus chillers in the Central Utilities Plant and Satellite Utility Plants. Performs troubleshooting tasks in response to chiller power failures and assists contractors during chiller diagnoses and repair. interprets and follows electrical construction documents (blueprints), oral instructions, and written work requests. Completes all assigned training related to 15kV voltage responsibilities and steam boiler compliance. Responsible for altering, maintaining, installing, and repairing wiring, conduits, fittings, and fixtures in the repair and renovation of lighting in the Central Utilities and Satellite Plants.
  • Assists Utilities & Engineering Services personnel as assigned.  Operates mobile equipment and/or campus vehicles, including trucks, golf carts, personnel lifts, and forklifts, and maintains licensure and completes required training. Strives to provide excellent service to campus areas, as measured by the 5-star program. Demonstrate proficient use of AiM mobile devices to complete work orders. Other duties as needed, including back-up plant operator duties in Utilities and assisting other specialists or maintenance technicians. Perform calibrations for sensors, controllers, flow meters, and other measurement devices.
