Administers and oversees the university's laser safety program by developing policies, conducting hazard assessments, performing facility inspections, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and industry safety standards. Serves as the Certified Laser Safety Officer, providing training, investigating incidents, maintaining laser inventories and records, and managing laser decommissioning activities. Performs equipment calibration, x-ray unit inspections, and regulatory compliance activities while supporting radiation safety initiatives. Monitors advancements in laser technology and safety regulations, participates in safety committees, and recommends policy improvements to maintain best practices and protect personnel and the university community.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining laser safety programs, which includes training staff, monitoring operations, and ensuring compliance with relevant safety standards and regulations. Responsible for complete knowledge of Federal and State regulations which relate to laser safety in a university environment. Develop and maintain laser safety programs and procedures in compliance with state and national regulations. Ensure all lasers and laser systems are registered and classified according to guidelines set by relevant authorities. Serves as the Certified Laser Safety Officer for the university community.
  • Determines the exposure potential for non-ionizing radiation workers through laser hazard evaluations and protocols. Conducts regular inspections and audits of laser facilities and operations to identify potential hazards and ensure safety measures are in place. Investigate laser-related incidents or accidents, determining the cause and recommending corrective actions. Be well-versed in relevant safety standards and regulations set forth by organizations such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
  • Manage and monitor the disposal of laser decommissioning and update of laser inventory, in accordance with environmental regulations. Maintain records of laser safety inspections, incidents, training, and equipment maintenance. Ensures compliance with all regulations and ordinances.
  • Performs periodic instrument calibration, adjusting and repairs when necessary. Performs inventory and leak testing of x-ray units in accordance with license conditions and all applicable regulations.
  • Remain constantly vigilant to changes or advances that may have an impact on EH&S related programs through proactive methods such as audits, research, interactions with colleagues at related institutions and by attending professional courses or society meetings. Keep abreast of new developments in laser technology, safety standards, and regulations and incorporate this knowledge into the organization’s safety program. Immediately report any findings that may affect University programs to supervisors and assist in determining and implementing necessary policy changes to ensure best practices are realized.  Member of the radiation safety committee and the laser safety subcommittee.
