Custodial Service's John Gregory Honored with Garnet & Gold Award from University Housing
Date - May 7th 2026
Residence halls are the quintessential home away from home for students at Florida State. The well-trodden hallways, common spaces, and shared kitchens become the foundation for a built-in community unique to on-campus living. Facilities is responsible for the behind-the-scenes support that keeps FSU's residence halls safe, clean, and operational.
Approaching John Gregory's office in Ragans Hall, one can see the numerous decorations and notes from students and staff that cover his door and spill onto the adjoining walls, indicating that, as Facilities Supervisor, he is an integral part of the Ragans Hall community.
This spring, Gregory was recognized by University Housing with a Garnet and Gold Award. The annual award highlights students and staff members who support the mission of University Housing through their outstanding service, dedication, and contributions that enhance this foundational part of campus life.
Gregory credits those around him for creating a positive workplace culture and helping him succeed at FSU in a relatively short time. He added that his team's support has been central to his success. "My team is reliable, strong, hardworking, kind, humble, thoughtful, and selfless," Gregory said. "Truthfully, I don't win this award without this quality crew."
Finally, he praises his supervisor, West Side Housing Facilities Superintendent Mark Shelton. "He has influenced me the most during my time here at FSU. He's my direct supervisor, and he keeps me motivated to complete tasks and stay on top of potential projects. His energy is infectious, and I'm forever grateful for the open lines of communication that have helped me to adapt to the Florida State way."
Gregory began his career at FSU in May 2025 as Facilities Supervisor for Ragans Hall. In just one year at the university, he has made an immediate impact on the lives of both students and staff.
"It means everything to me to win this award," Gregory said. "I try my best to help make Ragans a positive experience for every student. I was shocked to find out that I was both nominated and the recipient of the University Housing Garnet & Gold Award. I had no idea about being nominated."
For Gregory, the recognition reflects the importance of the work happening behind the scenes in University Housing. "What I enjoy most about my role in University Housing is the ability to make a difference immediately," he said. "Usually, when we get involved, we are immediately correcting an issue or resolving a problem. It feels good to provide solutions and restore satisfaction here at Ragans Hall.”
