Building Excellence: Steve Hall

It takes more than the flip of a switch to keep a university the size of Florida State running. As Electric Shop Supervisor for FSU Facilities, Steve Hall has spent nearly 20 years helping power the campus community. He joined Facilities Maintenance in 2010, following three years at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Before coming to FSU, Hall spent approximately two decades in the commercial and industrial electrical industry, where he gained extensive experience installing electrical conduit, wiring and equipment up to 15kV, troubleshooting electrical distribution and emergency power systems, and coordinating complex projects. The technical expertise and problem-solving skills he developed throughout those years continue to serve him every day as he leads the Facilities Electrical Shop in keeping campus safely powered.
Throughout his career, Hall has remained committed to continuous learning. His background includes extensive hands-on electrical training through manufacturer certification programs, continuing education opportunities, and industry-specific coursework. He has completed numerous technical training courses focused on electrical systems, emergency power generation, equipment maintenance, and safety practices. For Hall, staying current with evolving technology and industry standards is an essential part of the profession.
As Electric Shop Supervisor, Hall oversees the daily operations of the electrical shop, leading a team of electricians and generator technicians while coordinating work assignments and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with code. His responsibilities include planning preventive maintenance, managing work orders, responding to urgent electrical issues, coordinating with contractors and campus partners, and mentoring employees as they develop their skills.
No two days are ever the same, and that's one of the aspects Hall enjoys most about his work. His day typically begins by reviewing work orders, meeting with his team, and prioritizing scheduled maintenance and campus projects. From there, he spends his time troubleshooting complex electrical issues, inspecting ongoing work and responding to unexpected service calls or emergencies to help keep Florida State's campus operating safely and reliably.
When asked what he enjoys most about working at FSU, Hall points to the people. He values working alongside a dedicated team that takes pride in supporting the university and finds it rewarding to know their work helps provide a safe and dependable campus environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. He also takes great pride in mentoring employees and watching them grow professionally.
Outside of work, Hall enjoys spending time with his family, who share a love of sports and cruising together. Family is an important part of his life, and he prioritizes supporting them and being involved in their activities. In his free time, he also enjoys maintaining saltwater reef aquariums and exploring new projects through 3D printing!
